Felipe Santiago Gutiérrez (1824-1904)

12 de Sep 2017 - 14 de Jan 2018

This exhibition showed to the visitor the contributions that Felipe Santiago Gutiérrez made to the development of the 19th-century painting in Mexico, which were achieved thanks to his importance as an element for the stylistic change between Romanticism and Realism. His contributions were important because he participated in the creation of an academic painting school in Colombia. This life experience also helped the artist to complete the piece that could be his biggest contribution: the creation of the first female nude in Colombia and México.

The importance of said representation does not only lie on the premise of the academic paint’s renovation towards Realism, but also on the translation to painting of the metaphoric literary language of the female body as the area that embodies the symbolic representation of the Andean geography. Throughout the exhibition, the visitors were able to recognize the different aesthetic sides of the artist and his incursion in various pictorial genres. Visitors also appreciated the journeys he made to different European regions and how these contributed to the development of his own artistic language.
