Los modernos

11 de Nov 2015 - 03 de Apr 2016

This exhibition offered to the public a general overview of modern art’s development during the 20th century thanks to a selection of more than 140 artworks deriving from the collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, France and from the Museo Nacional de Arte; as well as the participation of other important collections.

By dividing the exhibition thematically, the aesthetic contributions impelled by avant-garde artistic movements were highlighted, which simultaneously and in different latitudes, coincided in the same concerns about the rejection of the figurative tradition of naturalistic representation and the exaltation of matter as an essential condition of a new pictorial language.

Some of the works of painting great masters of this period engaged in a dialogue derived from the confrontation of the collective and individual doubts, allowing the reunion of artists like Pierre Bonnard, Albert Gleizes, George Braque, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Fernand Lèger, Pierre Soulages, Francis Bacon, junto a Saturnino Herrán, Ángel Zárraga, Gerardo Murillo, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, José Clemente Orozco, Germán Cueto, Remedios Varo, Roberto Montenegro, among others.

The Museo Nacional de Arte is grateful and recognizes the generous contribution of the French embassy in Mexico in order to make this exhibition possible.
