01 de Oct 1989 - 31 de Jan 1990
With the exhibition Tolsá, Ximeno, Fabregat. Trayectoria artística en España, siglo XVIII which was conceived within the framework of the symposium “Valenica/México. Arte y academias en el ámbito hispánico del siglo XVIII” from October 1989 to January 1990, another milestone was added to the cultural events scheduled by the Comisión V Centenario. Encuentro de dos mundos, of the Generalitat Valenciana, on the occasion of the Discovery of America, a mutual discovery of two cultures.
The exhibition’s goals were achieved. Among them were the approach to a wider public and not only specialists who were interested in Hispanic art, by means of presenting a set of artworks that portray the Valencian artistic environments where the formation of Valencians Manuel Tolsá, Rafael Ximeno, and José Joaquín Fabregat took place before maturing artistically in Mexico, having accomplishments in New Spain’s art at the end of the 18th century.
The exhibition tried to show an overview of the artistic environments where the formation of Tolsá, Ximeno, and Fabregat took place, anonymously, in Spain. At the same time, it contributed to outline the current status of our knowledge, following elaborated premises, about their particular artworks in the New Spain. It also allowed scholars, from that singular historical angle, to come close to those environments which could impregnate or not their artworks of maturity, which were so important in the general overview of the Hispanic artistic academicism of the end of the 18th century.
