José Manzo. Artista Neoclásico (1789-1860) was a project that the Museo Nacional de Arte presented in collaboration with the Autonomous University of Puebla. It took place in the room for temporary exhibitions in the museum, from March 15 to May 22 of 1983. It was embodied by a drawing collection that safeguards the picture gallery of the university, and that is complemented with other art objects and documents, which allow the exhibition of the figure of this artist that was born in Puebla in 1789.
He was one of the great masters of the Neoclassicism that left an imprint of his creative power in several areas of the human expression. He was influenced by Manuel Tolsá, who upon his arrival in New Spain recommended to bishops, priests and the faithful to update the interiors of the temples, replacing the complex forms of the Baroque and Rococo with the simple forms of the Neoclassicism. This is a key piece for the review of Manzo’s work, who made his artistic project alongside Antonio Villafañe, and under the tutelage of his professors Salvador del Huerto and Miguel Jerónimo Zendejas.
