Owner of a restless temperament, a versatile personality and a remarkable critical capacity that surfaced both in litigation and in journalism, Joaquín Clausell made of exile an enriching experience, full of encounter, wonder, and learning in a creative field in which interesting proposals were generated in the plastic language.
Impressionism had an important impact in Mexico. It permeated the work of numerous artists that found, through its principles, a new way of observing the Mexican landscape, one of these artists was Clausell. A matter of great importance in Mexico’s art history has been to revalue the influence that this School represented during the firsts decades of the 20th century. This was also the purpose that encouraged this exhibition that gathered examples of different artists that present impressionist characteristics in their artworks.
With the exhibition Joaquin Clausell y los ecos del impresionismo en México, we aimed to provide a panoramic visión of the reception that this artistic movement had in our country. The exhibition was distributed in four sections and it not only 60 artworks by Clausell but also showed the technical characteristics and the themes used by his contemporaries. By presenting this exhibition, the Museo Nacional de Arte sought to contribute to the knowledge and reassessment of the figure of Joaquín Clausell and, that way, confirm its vocation as an open space for the diffusion of the most outstanding exponents of the Mexican plastic.
