It is important to say that in a gesture of exceptional trust and generosity, numerous collectors and institutions contributed the fundamentals of this tribute: the artworks of Arrieta, who found a place in the rooms of the Museo Nacional de Arte for the knowledge and enjoyment of one of the most complex and vital artists of Mexico of all time.

The 120th anniversary of José Agustín Arrieta’s (1803-1874) death was a timely coincidence so the exhibition entitled Homenaje Nacional José Agustín Arrieta (1803-1874) —which took place from August to October of 1994— was a motif of national tribute. It was carried out through the Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes and the National Institute of Fine Arts.
Arrieta, as Justino Fernández said, "unlike any other artist, he took care exclusively and in advance of traditional Mexican themes, which along his great painter qualities made that his artworks had no equal”, belonged to the century of the insurgency and the awareness of one’s own. It was necessary for this exhibition and tribute to gather the largest possible number of Arrieta’s oils but, most of all, ensure a new interpretation of his work in light of the new advances in the history of art.
