Del istmo y sus mujeres. Tehuanas en el arte mexicano

01 de Aug 1992 - 31 de Oct 1992

The paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, engravings, documents, clothing, and the exhibition itself have been taken from the environment and time where they were originated. Now, the Museo Nacional de Arte summons and orders them in a foreign space, to suggest and project affirmations that are related to the iconographic variants of the figure of the tehuana, from the last century to the present day. At the same time of the history of our plastic, the exotic and mystical tehuana was configured. It is local and national, heroic, a symbol and stereotype, a theme and a motif for Mexican art.

Although the main theme of the exhibition is the tehuana in Mexican art, a good number of photos of ethnographic, historical and domestic nature support the theme. At the same time, dresses, jewelry, bibliography, hemerography, and allusions to its participation in the national cinematography complement it.
